Story and lore

This page is optional. It can reveal Academy events, Area mysteries, the antagonist, and the intended ending. Later-campaign material is partly planned. Its inclusion here is a story reference, not a claim that the ending is playable. Nothing in the rules requires you to read it.

Names in the later story, including the antagonist’s, are working names rather than a released canon promise. Eldergreen’s quests exist in a partial build. Stonefall, Sunreach, Arcadia, and the finale are not a completed playable chain.

The Academy mystery

The Academy’s lessons lead into trouble involving a stolen Academy seal, damaged ley channels, disturbed wildlife, and the Forgotten Cave. In Chapter VI, the trainee and a fellow student explore beneath the Academy, encounter the Hall of Four, and discover the Hollow Warden and the neglected protection beneath the school.

The four figures in the Hall face inward. They connect the four class disciplines to a duty older than the Academy. The Warden is a construct and a forgotten guardian, rather than a simple evil monster. A choice to renew or redirect the ward is recorded, along with the companion, for later callbacks. Chapter VII closes with the Master’s report and farewell, without resolving the seal thief’s identity.

The Underseal and the Four Roads

The current Arc 2 story direction makes the Underseal an ancient binding over a ley breach beneath the Academy. Its four Anchors correspond to four Areas and disciplines:

The central revelation is that the Underseal was sustained by walking the Four Roads. The founders bound the Anchors and maintained their tethers through travel. Later Wayfarers carried on the duty. The Academy inherited the benefit but forgot the work, leaving the Hollow Warden alone.

The Singing Vein answers the player beneath the Academy. Their attunement makes them a new Wayfarer and gives the travel mechanic a place in the world’s fiction.

Eldergreen: the Walk Partial

Loosened boundary stones make the roots sing wrongly and drive the Thornwood goblins across the line. The hero investigates Greenpath Stones, chooses between helping the lumberers or protecting the grove, explores the Sunken Ruin, and reaches the Ancient Grove.

Tarn accompanies the authored quests. Choices include the fork road, parleying or fighting in the Skrat thread, and the response offered at the guardian’s ring. The Root Fragment carries the idea that the Underseal is a continuing duty of travel. Its authored gift is the Walker’s Knot. Grey Wax Seal and Surveyor’s Papers I are also authored story items.

The current combat versions of the story’s goblins, Skrat, and Aldwyn use existing substitute enemies. Some proposed advantages currently reduce armour rather than implementing their final narrative boss mechanic. Dialogue consequences should not be read as completed boss-phase systems.

The other three roads Planned

Stonefall: the Watch

The planned Stonefall story connects deep-mine disturbances and displaced kobolds to a loosened Stone tether. Its central clue is the Roll of Keepers, with a damaged entry reading “Rook. Relief. Not seated.” It supplies a name without initially revealing the whole relationship to the Academy.

Sunreach: the Undoing

The planned Sunreach story connects disturbed tombs, walking dead, and threatened caravans to the Sun Anchor. Its clue explains the Relief Token: a guardian accepts its bearer as relief and allows an Anchor to yield. A Wayfarer’s steps are needed to make the loosened binding hold again.

Arcadia: the Keep

The planned Arcadia story follows disrupted ley currents, misbehaving wisps and constructs, and the buried knowledge of the library. Its clue reveals that the four tethers meet beneath the Academy and that someone intends to hold the whole weave alone.

The Relief

The current story direction names the antagonist Halden Rook, called the Relief and recognised on the roads as the Grey One. These remain working story names.

Rook was the last candidate in an Academy relief rota. After discovering the Warden’s real burden, they tried to persuade the Academy to maintain the watch. Neglect turned their concern into a plan to gather the Anchors under one keeper: themselves.

Their grey wax seal appears across the Areas. They loosen rather than simply destroy the Anchors, exploit local intermediaries, and carry the stolen Academy seal as the Relief Token. The intended antagonist is understandable but dangerous: trying to prevent another forgotten guardian by recreating the same lonely burden.

Fragments and the intended ending

Each Area contributes a Resolution Fragment and a different clue. The revised story direction uses fixed clues per Area, so the picture can be assembled in different orders. That replaces an older idea of changing each Area’s clue according to completion order.

The intended finale returns to the keep beneath the Academy after the four starter Fragments. The ending echoes Chapter VI’s renewal or redirection choice: retain a single keeper, or establish a shared watch. It can refer to class, earlier decisions, and the Academy companion.

The finale, full Fragment journal, return journey, and all resulting scenes are not a completed playable chain in the current checkout.
